What is the type of key I need for my car?
The type of key you need for your car depends on your car’s year, make, and model. However, most car keys these days are transponder keys. If you have a transponder key, we can reprogram it to work with your vehicle.
What types of car key replacements are out there?
There are two types of car key replacements:
- OEM car keys (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
- Non-OEM keys (aftermarket keys)
About OEM Keys:
An OEM key is a car key made by the original manufacturer of the car. Most car keys are OEM keys.
There are several pros to using OEM keys:
- OEM keys are made by the car’s original manufacturer, so they are guaranteed to work with the vehicle.
- OEM keys are usually made of very durable and high-quality materials.
- OEM keys typically come with a warranty from the car manufacturer.
There are also some cons to OEM keys:
- OEM keys can be expensive.
- OEM keys can be hard to find at times.
About Non-OEM (Aftermarket) Keys :
A third-party company usually makes aftermarket keys. They are sometimes called “replacement keys” or “universal keys.”
There are several pros to using non-OEM keys:
- Non-OEM keys are usually less expensive than OEM keys.
- Non-OEM keys are easy to find since they are widely available.
However, there are also a few cons to using non-OEM keys:
- Non-OEM keys are usually made of lower-quality materials.
- Your local dealership or locksmith can’t program some non-OEM car keys.
- Aftermarket car keys may cause problems with your car.
Can I get a car key made with the original?
You can get a replacement key made even if you don’t have the original. You’ll need to give your local locksmith some information about it, and they should be able to help out!
A skilled locksmith might be able to replace any broken keys, regardless of where they came from or how old those pieces are- all without breaking a sweat (and maybe saving money in the process).
When contacting a professional locksmith for assistance, it’s essential to have the information needed ready. That usually includes the make and model of the car, and if it’s a transponder key, its unique programming.
Assuming that this information is unavailable, however, a locksmith could still create a new key using the Vin of the car as a guide- it might just take a little longer than usual.
When replacing car keys, our skilled professionals can also program transponder chips to your original key- regardless of whether or not it was working before.
If your car is equipped with a security system, we should be able to reprogram the immobilizer so that it’s ready for you to drive away.
What Does A Car Key Replacement Cost?
For a car key replacement in the Bay Area, the average cost can range from $90-$600. This depends on the type of car key replacement needed, how old your car is, and if it’s a transponder key.
If you have an older car, you might get away with getting a standard non-transponder key made. If that’s the case, it’ll usually cost between $90-$250.
If your car has a transponder chip key, you’ll need to get it reprogrammed to work with the vehicle. That can cost between $150-$600.
However, there are also instances when your locksmith may have to extract a broken key from the ignition switch or door. If that’s the case, the cost could go up to $700.
It’s important to remember that car key replacement costs vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the year.
What will my car locksmith in San Jose, CA, do?
Knowing what to expect from a car key replacement is essential. Here are some steps that could be taken during this process:
- Your locksmith will inspect your broken key.
- They will then create a new key based on the information they have.
- The next step is car key programming, which is essential for transponder keys.
- After that’s done, your locksmith will test the key to make sure it works properly.
- If there are other issues with your car’s security system, they will be addressed and fixed.
The entire new car keys made process usually takes around 30 minutes to 2 hours. Once everything is in order, you’re good to go!

Unfortunately, we parked our car with house keys in the car at the garage that got shut after 9 pm in SF city. Adam was awesome, right on time that too after-hours past midnight on Halloween. Very professional, great value. I would recommend Buddy’s locksmith to anyone in need of locksmith services.
Thierry (Local Guide) – Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value
Professional and friendly. The locksmith came over, replaced my lock, and explained how to use the keypad for only 85$.
Vanessa Ruiz – Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value
Thank you so much, Mike. He came as fast as he could, opened my door, and was very nice and professional. Thank you so much it was a Ford Mustang.
Rachel Steinberg (Local Guide)
The quality of the work was fine, but other things were problematic. I scheduled them to install a smart lock for me. First, the locksmith didn’t show up at the scheduled time, and when I called them, they said they didn’t even have me on the schedule.
When he did show up, it only took about 20 minutes to install the lock, which was great. But I was then charged more than the original quote. When I asked about it, the locksmith just kept repeating the price.
I appreciated the efficiency and quality of the work, but scheduling and pricing were all wrong for me.
UPDATE: I was contacted immediately by the company and refunded the difference in the quote vs. charge. I very much appreciate the company’s willingness to make it right.
